Which Water Utility Serves My Address?
The Richmond area has four main public water utilities, and your mailing address doesn’t always tell you which one is yours. Here’s how to find out, and where to see your water’s published numbers.
Three quick ways to check
1. Look at your water bill
The name on the bill is your utility. This is the fastest answer, and for most homes it’s the only step you need.
2. Find your locality
A “Richmond, VA” mailing address doesn’t always mean the City of Richmond, because homes in the surrounding counties can have Richmond addresses too. Your real estate tax bill or your county’s parcel map shows which locality your home is in.
3. Ask the utility
No bill handy, or buying a home? Each utility below can tell you about a specific address. Living in a county doesn’t guarantee public water at every address, so it’s worth asking if you’re not sure.

Chloramine figures are as reported in each utility’s 2025 report. Where a report gives more than one value, the figure shown is the higher one.
| Utility | Ask about an address | Chloramines | Full water data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chesterfield County Utilities | (804) 748-1864 Chesterfield Utilities | 2.34 ppm | Chesterfield County water |
| Henrico County Public Utilities | (804) 501-4275 Henrico Public Utilities | 3.8 ppm | Henrico County water |
| City of Richmond Public Utilities | (804) 646-7000 or 3-1-1 Richmond Public Utilities | 3.8 ppm | City of Richmond water |
| Hanover County Public Utilities | (804) 365-6019 Hanover water and sewer connections | 3.1 ppm | Hanover County water |

Why it matters
Each utility publishes its own water-quality report, and the numbers differ. Knowing yours lets you read the figures that apply to your home, including the chloramine level that whole-home filtration is sized to handle.
